Lawlor, Rose Theresa (née Dennis)

It is with profound sadness, but also joy for a life well lived, that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.

Peacefully at home on Wednesday, October 1, after a brave battle with cancer. Rose was in her 89th year.

Beloved wife of the late John Francis (Frank) Lawlor (1996). Loving mother of Michael, Patty Ann, Mary Catharine, Marty, Sandy, Tony, Laurie, Susan, and Robert. “Grandma” to Susannah (Terry Luck), Michael, Andrea (Judah Purcell), Meghan (Andrew Ferguson), Patrick, Carolyn, Katie (Kevin Monaco), Stephanie, Phil, Maureen, Kevin, Rhiannon, Alexander, and Regan. Great-grandmother to Jacob. Dear mother-in-law of Margherita Lawlor, Mary Lou Lawlor, Hugh Russell, and Jack Cieslar. Predeceased by her sister, Doris Murray, and brother, Matt Dennis.

Mom graduated from St. Michael's College at University of Toronto in 1946 with a Bachelor of Arts in Languages. She worked for Bell Canada in Toronto prior to assuming the busy and challenging responsibilities of motherhood. Mom, along with Dad, was a founding member of St. Ann’s Parish in Ancaster and she was an original and long-time member of the Catholic Women’s League at St. Ann’s.

Mom performed volunteer work for a number of organizations and received an Ontario Volunteer Service Award for her years of dedicated service. She delivered Meals on Wheels well into her 80s. An avid and talented knitter, Mom lovingly made hats and booties for newborn babies at local hospitals, as well as countless articles of clothing for her 14 grandchildren. Mom was a long-time member of the Ancaster Senior Achievement Centre and you could find her at Fortinos most Tuesday mornings having “coffee with the ladies.” Mom loved crossword and jigsaw puzzles. She always had time for a chat and a cup of tea, and she enjoyed a good game of Scrabble or cribbage.

The family is grateful to Mom’s many caregivers who included: Dr. McCallum and Dr. Rana, as well as Janet Noble’s team at CCAC. Your exemplary commitment, kindness and compassion will not be forgotten.

Friends will be received at the DODSWORTH & BROWN Funeral Home, ANCASTER CHAPEL, 378 Wilson Street East, on Monday, October 6 at 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will take place at St. Ann’s Church in Ancaster on Tuesday, October 7 at 11:00 a.m. Cremation to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Hamilton Food Share would be appreciated.

“Burn what is left of me and scatter the ashes to the wind to help the flowers grow. If you must bury something, let it be my faults, my weaknesses and all prejudices against my fellow man. If by chance you remember me, do it with a kind deed or word to someone who needs you. If you do all I have asked, I will live forever.”
